Winterizing Your Chaparral

Oct 30, 2020

The leaves are changing and it’s getting chiller out. Looks like it’s time to start thinking about winterizing the boat. We know this is no one’s favorite task, it is most people’s least favorite. It is still important to do it and do it the right way. Here we’ll give you some reminders on winterizing your Chaparral.

Dry Storage Prep

Once your Chaparral is safely out of the water, it’s time to get it clean. For specific cleaning solutions and procedures please refer to your Chaparral owner’s manual.

Deck

  • Wash the deck and walkway surfaces
  • Clean all deck hardware and apply a coat of rust inhibitor
  • Don’t forget to clean the outdoor and indoor carpet

Hull

  • Make sure to scrape off any barnacles or crusted marine growth and then scrub the hull thoroughly
  • Inspect underwater gear and propeller for excessive wear or damage
  • After you have done both of those things, it is time to apply a fresh coat of bottom paint
  • Remove hull drain plug; store it in a safe place
  • Allow bilge water to drain, raise the bow of the boat during the period of storage

Helpful reminders!

Here are some things you’ll be glad you took the extra time to do when the summer comes back around and you open up your Chaparral again:

  • Clean boat interior including all cabinets
  • Lay all plastic cushions flat
  • Check for adequate air circulation around life jackets and other safety equipment left onboard
  • Make sure to clean and dry your bilge, do not leave any materials such as rags, sponges or other cleaning material
  • If the weather is good, open all doors, hatches, portals, and windows to air out the interior for a day or two

Systems and Components

If you live in an area where temperatures fall below freezing, you need to winterize your systems and components. If you do not, they can become damaged. This includes the strainer, ballast pump, Porta-Potti, head, holding tank, water tank, sewer system, and water systems. As a result of not being able to completely drain water systems with a water heater installed, it is recommended that potable water system antifreeze be run through the entire system at the time of winterization. This needs to be flushed completely before use the following spring. We strongly recommend having your dealer perform winterization procedures for your boat.

The Engine

Just like the systems and components, if you live in an area where the temperature falls below freezing, you must winterize your engine. Please refer to your owner's manual for specific information on your engine on how to winterize it properly.

Stern Drive

Remove the stern drive unit. Have a qualified engine technician check and adjust alignment, as necessary.

Fuel System

Add a gasoline stabilizer solution to the fuel tank. Follow the product manufacturer’s recommended procedure.

Battery

Remove the battery from the boat and store battery in a cool dry place away from freezing temperatures.

We recommend having a qualified dealer perform winterization procedures on your boat. If you have any questions on the winterization of your Chaparral please refer to your owner’s manual for specifics or contact your dealer.
